NBC Today Show interviews local Hope Academy student about her experience with Inhalants

Indianapolis, IN –Thursday, November 19, Hope Academy student and former Fairbanks patient, Ashley Upchurch will appear on the Today Show in a segment about the dangers of inhalant abuse among teenagers and children. As someone who formerly abused air duster on a weekly basis, Ashley will speak about the prevalence and the life threatening effects of a drug that is also a household item.

The Today Show interviewed Ashley at Hope Academy, the recovery high school at Fairbanks, and captured a day in the life of a student in recovery from addiction. She was filmed participating in history and art class as well as with other Hope Academy students during recreational time.

In addition to the interview with Ashley, the Today Show will interview a family from Ohio that lost a child to inhalant abuse as well as an expert on the topic of inhalants. Another component to this special will be a hidden camera that follows two young children through grocery stores and pharmacies to purchase items that could potentially be used for huffing.

Hope Academy, the recovery high school at Fairbanks, is a tuition-free, charter high school that provides educational excellence and an achievement oriented curriculum with the promotion of sobriety and personal growth. Hope Academy is for high school students from Indiana who have had primary treatment for alcohol/drug addiction or are in recovery and engaged in a recovery-based lifestyle.

Fairbanks is a nonprofit organization that focuses on recovery from alcohol and drug problems. Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Applications Available

Hendricks County – The Hendricks County Community Foundation is proud to partner with Lilly Endowment, Inc. to select two Hendricks County high school seniors as nominees for the 2010 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program is designed to raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana and leverage further the ability of Indiana ’s community foundations to improve the quality of life of the state’s residents.

The scholarship provides FULL TUITION, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $800 per year for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis, leading to a baccalaureate degree at any Indiana public or private college or university accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

To be eligible, student must:

· Be a Hendricks County resident

· Be ranked in the top 15% (GPA) of his/her class

· Be involved in significant community service activities throughout his/her high school career

· Be involved in extracurricular activities

· Graduate by the end of June 2010 with a diploma from a regionally accredited Indiana high school

· Be accepted to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an accredited public or private college or university in Indiana

Applications must be submitted online. You may access the online application via the Hendricks County Community Foundation website at: http://www.hendrickscountycf.org/scholarships/lilly_scholars/. The online application for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship becomes valid only when completed in its entirety by December 15, 2009.

The Hendricks County Community Foundation manages an $7 million collection of funds that are created by individuals, families, businesses and organizations for charitable purposes. Over 35 scholarships will be awarded by the Hendricks County Community Foundation in 2010. Since 1996, the Community Foundation has awarded over 250 scholarships worth over $2.9 million.

Hendricks County Community Foundation Awards $46,500 in Grants to Local Organizations

Avon , Ind. – The Hendricks County Community Foundation announces the recipients of its 2009 Deedee Daniel Opportunity Fund grants. The grants, totaling $46,500, will benefit charitable organizations that enhance the community, help those in need or provide educational opportunities.

The 15 organizations benefiting from these grants service thousands of Hendricks County residents.

There are many projects that the grant money will benefit ranging from a weekend camp for physically, mentally and emotionally handicapped people to the Hendricks County College and Career Fair as well as the new Hendricks Regional Health YMCA Healthy Lifestyle Center project.

Central Indiana Land Trust received a grant for Burnett Woods Nature Preserve. Maria Steiner, Community Relations Director, shares, “The grant from the Community Foundation will help us purchase a 10.5 acre inholding at Burnett Woods Nature Preserve and restore it to native trees. This will expand the preserve to a total of 80 acres, providing a larger, permanently protected habitat for wildlife. It will also enhance the recreational space available to Hendricks County residents, as well as visitors from around Central Indiana who visit the preserve for the diverse display of wildflowers in the spring.”

“For libraries - a poor economy means less funding, coupled with more demand for services from people who really need our resources,” commented Cheryl Myers Steinborn of the Coatesville-Clay Township Public Library. She continued, “We are asked to do more with less. Grants, such as the one we just received from the Hendricks County Community Foundation, help us to continue to offer a quality experience for our patrons. Having this automated external defibrillator (AED) on-site will assure more safety and peace of mind for those using our facility as a community gathering place.”

“One of our goals at the Community Foundation is to strengthen nonprofits while supporting organizations that will promote a healthy and vibrant community,” says Janet Haley, executive director of the Community Foundation. “We have so many valuable organizations servicing Hendricks County ; we are working to increase our endowments so we can fund more requests each year.”

The Community Foundation received a record 34 grant proposals this year.

Habitat for Humanity Receives HCCF Grant

HC Community Foundation Grant

Habitat for Humanity is grateful for the grant of $2,000 to the homeowner education course offered to Partner Families, and the community, by the Habitat Program. The Hendricks County Community Foundation has made possible, through this grant, the development of a new curriculum for homeowner education. The new program is a 62 credit hour course divided between the Fall and Spring semesters. Fall classes begin in August and run through Nov. The Spring classes begin in January and run through March. The summer months are open for construction of the Habitat homes. Partner Families working on “sweat equity” in both the construction and classroom work are heavily involved in the program for up-to 24 months. The public is invited to attend and participate in the classes and /or construction. Registration is required by calling the office at 317-272-1405.

We are excited to be able to offer this new curriculum. The Fall semester is almost ready to close and the Spring semester will begin January 7, 2010 with the new Construction Technology Course. This class will teach the construction of a Habitat house from the ground up. Classes will meet Thursday evenings, 6:30pm at the Habitat office 360 N. SR 267 in Avon. We strongly encourage the public to attend the course for general practical knowledge of construction principles and practice. Then one Saturday, January through March, Habitat offers six-hour courses in Biblical worldview, Biblical marriage, Biblical parenting and Biblical finances. The final class Thursday 4-1-10 will be on homeowners insurance and a mock closing. This will prepare homeowners and volunteers for the challenges ahead. Again, Habitat is grateful to the Hendricks County Community Foundation for the grant that has made this public outreach possible through Habitat for Humanity.

Governor Daniels Honors Hendricks County

Business with Award for Longevity

INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 4, 2009) — Governor Mitch Daniels honored a Hendricks County business for longevity and community service in the Statehouse today during the annual Governor’s Century and Half Century Business Awards ceremony.

The governor presented Robert A. Hall Insurance Agency Inc. with a Half Century Award. Lt. Governor Becky Skillman and Mitch Roob, Secretary of Commerce and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, joined Daniels in honoring all of the Indiana companies for their commitment to Indiana.

“Simply speaking, building a business takes drive, business acumen and sometimes a little luck. Building a successful company which spans decades and generations, however, is a truly special accomplishment. It is my honor to recognize Hoosier entrepreneurs who have left permanent marks on their communities through their homegrown enterprises,” said Daniels.

The Governor’s Century and Half Century Business Awards honor Indiana businesses that have remained in operation for 100 or 50 years or more and have also demonstrated a history of community service. More than 1,300 companies from across Indiana have been recognized during the 19-year history of the Awards.

The Robert A. Hall Insurance Agency was founded in 1949 when Robert A. Hall, a claims representative department manager for Hartford Insurance Co., decided to become an independent agent in his hometown of Plainfield.

Nominated by individuals or organizations within the same community, the Governor’s Century and Half Century Awards honor Indiana’s well-established companies and their outstanding contributions to the economic growth and prosperity of the state.
